Renting a self - drive car gives you complete freedom to discover Goa's hidden gems. However, if it’s your first time driving in this coastal state, there are a few important local rules and tips you must keep in mind to ensure a safe and stress - free holiday.
1. Always Carry a Physical Driving Licence
Digital copies are generally accepted, but carrying your original physical driving licence is highly recommended when driving a commercial self - drive vehicle (black plates with yellow numbers) in Goa. The local traffic police frequently conduct routine checks near major junctions in Panaji, Mapusa, and Calangute.
2. Respect Local Speed Limits
Goa's highways have strict speed limits monitored by speed cameras:
- Atal Setu (Mandovi Bridge) & New Zuari Bridge: 60 km/h (Strictly enforced!).
- Open Highways: 70 - 80 km/h depending on the stretch.
- City and Village Roads: 30 - 40 km/h. Slow down for sharp turns and speed bumps.
3. Parking Etiquette in Beach Areas
Never park your vehicle on narrow village roads or near beach access paths where it block traffic. Always use designated public parking lots (available at Baga, Calangute, Mandrem, and Colva beaches) to avoid heavy fines or towing.
